History of Greek Handmade Dolls
The doll is believed to be the world's oldest toy, so it should come as no surprise to learn they were prevalent throughout Ancient Greece’s history. The Plagona doll was one of many popular handmade dolls among the Greeks with the oldest findings of the toy dating back to 700 B.C. These early handmade dolls were crafted from clay, often featured elaborate hairstyles and were dressed with hand drawn or fabric clothing. They even had articulating limbs, which most experts agree is the most important criteria for labeling a figure as a toy. Like most other dolls from the era, nobody can say for sure when or why the Plagona doll was created. However, it is widely believed they played important roles in religious ceremonies and preparing young girls for adulthood.
