The Mysterious Spinning Top
The spinning top’s origins are shrouded in mystery. No one is quite sure when or where the classic toy was first created. Though, the oldest archeological evidence of the spinning top dates all the way back to 4,000 B.C. in Iraq. From the tomb of King Tut to the writings of famous Greek philosophers such as Plato and Aristophanes, Ancient examples of the toy have been found across the globe.
Spinning tops grew to become a popular pastime among children and adults during the European Renaissance of the 15th and 16th centuries and have since spread to become one of the world’s most renowned classic toys. Their popularity is due in part to their elegant simplicity. With a twist of the fingers, the spinning top seems to effortlessly defy gravity.
